Finding the right resources for a person with a disability isn’t always easy. Programs and services are available throughout our region, but families often learn about them through word of mouth. That means valuable resources can go unused simply because people don’t know they exist.
I CAN Adaptive and Inclusive Fitness Training is helping change that.
This year, we had the opportunity to host I CAN’s second annual Special Needs Resource Fair, bringing nearly 20 organizations together in one place to connect individuals with disabilities and their families with resources, services, and opportunities throughout our community.
Resources All in One Place
Throughout the day, families met directly with community organizations serving people with diverse needs and learned about resources they might not have found otherwise.
Families learned about everything from adaptive swim instruction and cycling opportunities to resources for people living with epilepsy and other support for individuals with disabilities and their families.
Instead of searching for these resources one at a time, visitors could ask questions, make connections, and learn more about what’s already available right here in our region.
Creating Connections
There was plenty of fun mixed in with the information.
Visitors joined an inclusive dance class, watched a performance by the Indian Trail Sparkle Squad, played games, enjoyed the bounce house, filled up on delicious barbecue from Phil’s Dream Pit, and explored the Farm.
The activities gave families a chance to spend time together while creating opportunities to meet other families, service providers, and organizations in the community.
"For families navigating disability, knowing what resources exist and who to call can make a difference. Bringing so many organizations together makes those connections a little easier and gives service providers an opportunity to connect with one another, too," said Anna Harrison, Founder of I CAN Adaptive Fitness and Training.
A Partnership Built Around Inclusion
Hosting the Special Needs Resource Fair was a natural fit for our partnership with I CAN. Both of our organizations are working to create more opportunities for people with disabilities to participate, connect, and experience what our community has to offer.
We’re grateful to I CAN for bringing the Resource Fair to the Farm, to the nearly 20 organizations that shared their resources, and to the volunteers and families who spent the day with us.
